Working Out and Staying Motivated

Not many of us can say breaking a sweat at the gym is our favorite thing to do. However, getting active is super beneficial for not only your health, but your attitude. Physical activity releases endorphins, which help boost your mood and relieve stress, which is super great for us college students. Even with those benefits, it can be difficult to get excited about fitness. Here are a few ideas to keep you motivated about working out!

Goal Setting

Setting goals may sound like the most cliché thing ever, but it can be an awesome way to keep yourself on track. Whether the goal be to get active 4 times this week, or to lose 5 pounds. Find something that motivates you to get moving. I use a fitbit and getting the notification that I’ve met my steps feels awesome and encourages me too keep it up.

Have Fun!

Next, find activities that you enjoy. A room filled with treadmills and weights may not be your thing and that’s ok! Finding an activity that you enjoy doing will make your workout much less of a hassle. Try taking a yoga class, going for a hike, or swimming laps for fun and different ways to get active.

Exercise with a Friend

Another way to stay motivated is bringing your friends along. Making plans to hit the gym or go for a run will make it harder for you to cancel and holds you accountable. Friends are also a great support system for when you don’t want to run that last lap or push through your last set of reps.

Schedule Time to Work Out

Making time to work out can be difficult. Luckily, it’s always leg day at the U of A thanks to all the hills on campus! Instead of taking the bus or driving, try walking or biking to class. It’s a quick and easy way to get in some mileage on a busy day without having to take out an hour of your day to go to the gym.

Treat Yourself

Lastly, reward yourself for getting active! If you meet your goal, let yourself have an extra cookie after dinner or buy yourself a new water bottle. It doesn’t have to be materialistic. If you go to the gym 3 days in a row, take the 4th as an off day. Even the little things can make you motivated to keep going!

You have 2 gyms (membership included in tuition) on campus and the beautiful state of Arkansas at your fingertips, take advantage of it!
